A New Blueprint

When NewJeans debuted in July 2022 under ADOR (a subsidiary of HYBE), K-pop had seen a lot of debuts. The industry had its formulas, its proven strategies, its established templates for girl group success. NewJeans threw almost all of them out and charted a completely different course.

No elaborate debut countdown. No pre-debut survival show. No years of carefully managed hype. Just five teenage girls, a string of immediately iconic songs, and an aesthetic so distinct it felt genuinely new. Within months, NewJeans had become the most talked-about act in K-pop. Within a year, they were dominating charts not just in Korea but globally.

The Members

Minji (Kim Min-ji, born May 7, 2004) is the eldest member and serves as the group's leader. A former YG Entertainment trainee known for her poised stage presence and warm soprano vocals, Minji was one of K-pop's most anticipated new faces before NewJeans was even announced.

Hanni (Pham Ngoc Han, born October 6, 2004) was born in Australia to Vietnamese parents and grew up in Melbourne. She is known for her bright personality, melodic tone, and her ability to code-switch between English, Korean, and Vietnamese naturally. Hanni quickly became one of the most beloved members globally for her genuine, unfiltered charm.

Danielle (Danielle Marsh, born April 11, 2005) has a Korean mother and an Irish father and grew up in Australia. Her multilingual fluency and girl-next-door likability made her an immediate fan favorite, and her fashion sense has drawn significant attention from international brands.

Haerin (Kang Hae-rin, born May 15, 2006) is the group's main vocalist and is known for her cool, cat-like visuals and introverted charm. Haerin's quiet confidence and powerful voice have made her one of the most respected performers in the lineup.

Hyein (Lee Hye-in, born April 21, 2008) is the youngest member (maknae) and joined at an exceptionally young age. Despite debuting in her early teens, Hyein has demonstrated remarkable composure and skill, and her bold fashion presence has made her a standout.

The Sound and the Aesthetic

What made NewJeans different from the start was their sound. In a K-pop landscape dominated by high-energy performances, maximalist production, and intense choreography, NewJeans offered something that felt almost counterintuitively understated: smooth, groove-based R&B and pop influenced by 90s and 2000s music, delivered with a casual, cool confidence rather than a flashy display.

Tracks like Attention, Hype Boy, Cookie, and Hurt drew immediate comparisons to early 2000s Western pop and UK garage, but with a distinctly Korean sensibility. The production, helmed by 250 (producer Ylva Dimberg) and a network of international collaborators assembled by Creative Director Min Hee-jin, was unlike anything in the K-pop mainstream at the time.

Visually, NewJeans leaned into a Y2K-meets-indie-film aesthetic: low-rise jeans, vintage sportswear, washed-out colors, natural makeup, and a girl-next-door sensibility that felt refreshingly real compared to the hyper-polished image of most K-pop groups.

Chart Success and Records

NewJeans' debut EP, simply titled New Jeans, was released in August 2022 and performed exceptionally well commercially. Their follow-up single OMG and Ditto, released in January 2023, made history as the first song by a K-pop girl group to top the Gaon Digital Chart for multiple consecutive weeks, a milestone that had previously eluded even BLACKPINK and TWICE.

Super Shy (2023) became a global hit, charting in multiple countries and exposing NewJeans to audiences far outside the traditional K-pop fanbase. Their collaborations with brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, and McDonald's further expanded their mainstream visibility. By the end of 2023, NewJeans had been named Artist of the Year at multiple major Korean music awards.

Min Hee-jin and ADOR

NewJeans cannot be discussed without mentioning Min Hee-jin, the creative director who conceptualized them and served as CEO of ADOR. A former SM Entertainment art director who oversaw the visual identities of f(x), SHINee, and EXO, Min Hee-jin brought an artist's vision to NewJeans that permeated every element of their image, from album art to fashion to music video direction.

Her creative approach and disputes with HYBE leadership over management direction became a major public controversy in 2024, drawing significant media coverage and dividing opinions within the K-pop community. The situation ultimately led to significant changes in ADOR's leadership structure, and the members faced uncertainty about their future direction.

The Bunny Fandom

NewJeans fans are called Bunnies, a reference to the rabbit imagery woven throughout the group's visual identity. Bunnies are known for their warm and supportive fan culture, and the fandom grew rapidly across social media platforms in the group's first year. Fan communities on Twitter, TikTok, and Weverse are particularly active, sharing fan edits, translation posts, and coordinated support campaigns.

2025 and Beyond

Following the turbulence of 2024, NewJeans announced in early 2025 that they were departing from ADOR and rebranding as NJZ (New Jeans Z) as independent artists seeking a fresh start outside the HYBE ecosystem. Their loyal fanbase followed them through the transition, and the group has continued to create and perform with the same energy that made them icons in just a few short years.

Whatever label or name they operate under, the five members who debuted in 2022 with Attention and Hype Boy have already secured a permanent place in K-pop history.
