Table of Contents

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that appears in many Korean serums, toners and creams, usually marketed for the look of uneven tone, pores and oily-looking skin. It is commonly paired with calming ingredients and is often described as easy to layer. Patch test first, and use sunscreen daily.

Niacinamide is one of the most common ingredients on Korean skincare labels. At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, we get asked what it is, what it is for, and how to use it. Here is a plain-language guide, not medical advice.

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3. Brands use it in many formats and describe it as supporting the look of even-looking tone, refined-looking pores and a balanced feel on skin that looks oily. How it works for you varies from person to person.

A 2021 review by Yong Chool Boo in the journal Antioxidants describes nicotinamide (niacinamide) as a form of vitamin B3 and reports that topical use, alone or combined with other actives, has been studied in clinical trials for skin aging and hyperpigmentation. The review says topically applied nicotinamide is well tolerated by the skin, and it also states that there is no convincing evidence of specific molecular targets for these effects. In other words, the research is real but the exact mechanism is not settled, so treat product claims as brand positioning. Cleveland Clinic adds that most skincare products contain 5% or less niacinamide, and that people with sensitive skin can start with a lower concentration.

Why it shows up so often in Korean products

Korean formulas often combine a few well-known ingredients rather than relying on one. Niacinamide is a frequent partner for cica (centella), hyaluronic acid and panthenol, which brands position as soothing and hydrating. You will find it in serums, toners, creams and masks.

How to start

  • Patch test a small area first. Cleveland Clinic suggests applying a small amount to the forearm and waiting 24 hours.
  • Add one new product at a time so you can tell what your skin likes.
  • Layer thin to thick: toner, serum, then moisturizer.
  • Wear sunscreen every morning. It is the most basic part of any routine, especially if you are focused on tone.
  • Stop if skin feels irritated and ask a dermatologist if it does not settle. Cleveland Clinic notes that niacinamide is generally considered gentle, but rarely it can cause itching, mild burning or redness.

Many products are designed for daily use, and Cleveland Clinic says niacinamide can generally be used once or twice a day. Check the instructions and start slowly if your skin is sensitive.

Can I use niacinamide with retinol or vitamin C?

Morning or night?

Either. Many people use it in the morning under sunscreen and some use it at night; follow the product directions.
