Korean BB Cream: What It Is and How to Choose One

Table of Contents

A Korean BB cream ("blemish balm") is a tinted, skincare-style base that combines light coverage, moisture and usually SPF in one tube. It sits between a tinted moisturizer and a foundation. Choose by coverage, finish and the shades offered, and always check that the tone range matches your skin.

BB cream is one of the best-known Korean makeup products, and one of the most searched. At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, we get frequent questions about what makes it different from foundation and how to pick one. This guide uses reporting from Korean and international sources plus product-page facts for the BB creams we carry.

Where does BB cream come from?

According to The Korea Herald (May 2026), BB cream was first developed in Germany for post-procedure skin care and became a complexion shortcut in Korea in the early 2000s. Wikipedia, citing The New York Times and Maclean's, dates the original to the 1960s and a German dermatologist, Dr. Christine Schrammek, and says Korean companies developed it for everyday use from the 1980s. Sources differ on the exact Korean timeline, so treat the dates as approximate.

By 2010, The Korea Times reported that marketers promoted BB cream for brightening, covering blemishes and sun protection, that results varied with product quality, and that some users found creams oily or the shade range limited. Those two practical points, finish and shades, are still the main things to check.

BB cream vs foundation

BB cream Foundation
Typical coverage Sheer to medium Medium to full
Skincare aspect Often lists moisturizing or soothing ingredients Varies
SPF Often included Sometimes
Shade range Often only a few shades Often wider

These are general tendencies, not rules. The Korea Herald notes the market is moving toward makeup that works like skincare, with sheer, breathable formulas rather than heavy coverage.

For more coverage

MISSHA's M Perfect Cover is described as medium-to-high coverage, built up in layers with a sponge or fingertips. The M Signature Real Complete line is the one The Korea Times wrote about in 2010, reporting (without independently verifying it) that the original version sold 1 million tubes in eight months after launch.

For oilier skin or SPF-first routines

The Hanskin tube is built around SPF50+ and a low-shine finish. A BB cream is usually applied thinly, so check the label for how much product the SPF rating assumes; our Korean sunscreen guide explains how Korean sunscreens are rated.

How to apply

  1. Finish your skincare, including sunscreen if you use one.
  2. Dot a small amount on the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.
  3. Blend outward with fingertips, a sponge or a brush; the MISSHA page suggests patting to help it set.
  4. Build coverage in thin layers rather than one thick one.

FAQ

Is BB cream the same as foundation?

No. BB cream is usually lighter and often includes skincare ingredients and SPF; foundation usually offers more coverage and shade range.

Does BB cream replace sunscreen?

Check the label. The SPF rating assumes a certain amount of product, and BB cream is often worn thinly, so many people layer it over a separate sunscreen.

Why are there so few shades?

The Korea Times flagged limited shade options as a common complaint in 2010. Check the shade list on each product page before buying.

Can I wear BB cream every day?

Many people do. If you have sensitive skin, patch-test first and remove it thoroughly in the evening; our double cleansing guide explains how.
