Korean Skincare for Acne-Prone Skin: A Simple Routine and Products

Table of Contents

Korean skincare for acne-prone skin is built on doing less, more gently: a light double cleanse at night, a BHA or PHA toner two or three times a week, a soothing serum, a gel cream, pimple patches on active spots and a lightweight sunscreen every morning. Products in this routine come from Anua, beplain, SOME BY MI, Dr.G, medicube, Pyunkang Yul and Beauty of Joseon.

The Korean approach to breakout-prone skin is different from the "dry it out" approach many people grow up with. Instead of harsh washes and alcohol toners, Korean routines for blemish-prone skin lean on low-pH cleansing, mild exfoliating acids, calming plant extracts such as heartleaf and centella, and hydrocolloid patches. This guide lays that out as a short routine. It pairs with our oily skin guide, which covers shine and pores rather than breakouts.

At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, product descriptions come from the brands; "marketed for blemish-prone skin" means that is what the brand designed the product for, not a promise of results. Acne is a medical condition. If it is persistent, painful or leaving marks, see a dermatologist; the routine below is for mild, occasional breakouts and does not replace treatment.

One caution from dermatologists: the American Academy of Dermatology's acne self-care advice is to wash about twice a day and after sweating with fingertips and a mild cleanser, and to choose gentle, alcohol-free products, avoiding astringents, toners and exfoliants that can dry skin and worsen breakouts. It also says not to pick or pop pimples, to use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher labeled as not clogging pores, and to be patient, since treatments often take several weeks to a few months to show results. That is why the acid step below is kept to a few nights a week at most, and why you should stop it if your skin feels dry or irritated.

Step by step

1. A light double cleanse at night

Sunscreen and sebum are oil-based, so a cleansing oil removes them better than foam alone. Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil is marketed for pore care and is light enough for oily skin. Follow with a low-pH foam such as beplain Mung Bean pH-Balanced Cleansing Foam. In the morning, the foam alone is enough. The method is explained in What Is Double Cleansing?, which also notes that Cleveland Clinic says acne-prone skin may break out if an oil cleanser is used alone.

2. BHA or PHA, a few nights a week

BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble, which is why it is the acid most associated with blemish-prone skin; PHA is the gentlest option. SOME BY MI AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner combines all three at low strength and is one of the best-known Korean products in this category. medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 is the pad version of the idea; the brand is in the medicube guide. Start with two nights a week; daily use is a common mistake. The acids are explained in AHA, BHA and PHA Toners Explained.

3. A soothing toner on other nights

On nights without acids, and every morning, use a calming toner such as Anua Heartleaf 77 Hyaluron Soothing Toner. Heartleaf is the ingredient Korean brands reach for most in blemish-prone lines; we explain it in Heartleaf in Korean Skincare.

4. A soothing serum

Dr.G Red Blemish Clear Hyal Cica Soothing Serum is the serum from Dr.G's Red Blemish line, which the brand markets for blemish-prone, easily irritated skin, built around centella and hyaluronic acid; the line is covered in the Dr.G guide. One serum is enough; stacking several actives is where blemish-prone routines usually go wrong.

5. A gel cream, not no cream

Skipping moisturizer is the other common mistake. Dr.G Red Blemish Clear Soothing Cream is a gel-cream from the same line and took second place for creams at the Olive Young Awards 2025. It is light enough that oily skin does not feel coated. Aestura's THERACNE 365 Soothing Active Moisturizer is another cream marketed for acne-prone and oily skin; see the Aestura guide.

6. Pimple patches on active spots

Hydrocolloid patches are a staple of Korean routines. Put one on a clean, dry spot at night and leave it until morning. SOME BY MI Clear Spot Patch and Pyunkang Yul Clear Spot Patch are standard hydrocolloid options; the details are in How to Use Pimple Patches the Korean Way. Cleveland Clinic notes that patches work best on open or surface pimples and do not prevent new acne, so they are a spot tool, not a treatment.

7. A lightweight sunscreen every morning

Acids make skin more sun-sensitive, and sun exposure is part of why spots leave marks, so sunscreen is not optional in this routine. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh is the lighter, fresher-finish version of the brand's famous sunscreen. See the Korean sunscreen guide for why Korean sunscreens suit oily skin.

What to leave out

  • Scrubs, cleansing brushes and anything that "tingles". Physical exfoliation spreads irritation.
  • Alcohol-heavy toners and spot treatments used all over the face.
  • Using acids and retinol on the same night when you are starting out.
  • Picking. Patches exist partly to stop this.

Brand products in our shop are shipped by the brands. A curated box such as the Daebak K-Beauty Box is a separate option, but because its contents are not customized, blemish-prone skin usually does better choosing single products and introducing them one at a time.

FAQ

What is the best Korean skincare for acne?

There is no single best product, and persistent acne needs a dermatologist. For mild breakouts, the combination most Korean routines use is a low-pH cleanser, a BHA or PHA step a few times a week, a soothing serum, a gel cream and pimple patches.

Is snail mucin good for acne-prone skin?

Many people with blemish-prone skin use it as a light hydrating layer; patch test first. See Snail Mucin in Korean Skincare.

Should acne-prone skin use niacinamide?

It is common in Korean blemish-prone lines and often paired with the acids above. See Niacinamide in Korean Skincare.

How often should I use a BHA toner?

Two or three nights a week to start. Increase only if your skin tolerates it, and never on the same night as retinol when you are new to both. If your skin dries out or stings, stop and ask a dermatologist.

Can I wear pimple patches during the day?

Yes. Thin, clear patches are made for daytime and can go under makeup.
