Buying your first K-pop album is confusing in a way that buying music usually isn't. There are five versions of the same record. Something called a POB. Photocards that are random. And the whole thing arrives in a box the size of a hardcover book.
Here's what all of it means, explained from Seoul where this is just how music is sold.
What's Actually Inside
A K-pop album is a package, not a disc in a sleeve. A typical one contains a photobook of 50 to 100 pages, the CD itself, a folded poster, a lyric book, and one or more randomly inserted photocards. Some include stickers, a postcard, or a folded pull-out print.
The CD is often the least important part. Many fans never play it, which is why plenty of albums now ship as platform versions with a QR code instead of a disc.

Why There Are So Many Versions
Each version has a different photo concept, a different cover, and a different photocard set. The music is identical.
Groups release multiple versions because collecting is the point for a lot of fans, and because chart counting in Korea rewards physical sales. If you only want one, pick the concept whose photos you like most. If you're collecting photocards of one member, versions matter, since each version has a different pool.
Standard versions are the main release, usually sold everywhere.
Platform or Weverse versions are slimmer, app-linked, and cheaper to ship. Good if you care about the photocards and not the disc.
Limited editions are one-time pressings that don't get restocked.

POB: The Thing Nobody Explains
POB stands for pre-order benefit. It's an extra item, usually an exclusive photocard or poster, that a specific store adds to pre-orders of an album. It's not inside the sealed album. The store adds it to the shipping box.
This matters for two reasons. First, different stores give different POBs, so the same album from two shops isn't the same purchase. Second, POBs are only available during the pre-order window, and once it closes they're gone from retail forever.
For international fans this is the most frustrating part of album collecting, because Korean store POBs often never leave the country. When we carry an album with a POB included, we say so in the product title.

Random Means Random
Photocards are inserted randomly at the factory. Nobody, including us, can choose which member you get. Buying two copies doesn't guarantee two different cards. If you want a specific member's card, the honest answer is that trading with other fans is usually cheaper than buying more albums.
Practical Advice Before You Order
Check whether it's a pre-order. Pre-orders ship after the release date, sometimes weeks later.
Keep the shipping box. Album corners dent easily, and collectors care about condition.
Decide what you're buying it for. If it's for the photobook, buy the standard version. If it's for photocards, platform versions cost less per card. If it's to support the group on Korean charts, any version counts the same.
