What Is PDRN? Korea's Biggest Skincare Ingredient of 2026

Table of Contents

If you walked into an Olive Young in Seoul this year, you'd have seen the letters PDRN on end caps, shelf talkers, and roughly half the new product launches. Two years ago you would only have heard them inside a dermatology clinic.

That migration, from clinic to drugstore, is the most Korean thing about Korean skincare. Ingredients here don't stay professional for long.

The Short Version

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It's a fragment of DNA, most commonly sourced from salmon, chosen because its structure is remarkably close to human DNA. In Korean clinics it's been used for years in injectable treatments known here as "salmon DNA" or skin booster shots, aimed at recovery and skin texture after procedures.

Topical PDRN, the kind in a serum, is a different and gentler proposition. It won't do what an injection does. What it does well is support the skin barrier and calm skin that's irritated, which is why it shows up so often in products marketed for redness, post-blemish marks, and general "my skin is angry" situations.

Who It's Actually For

PDRN tends to suit people whose skin is reactive, recovering, or looking dull and tired rather than people chasing a single dramatic change. It plays well with other ingredients and rarely stings, which makes it an easier addition than retinol or strong acids.

If your main concern is deep wrinkles or pigmentation, retinal and vitamin C are still the heavier hitters. PDRN is the supportive one.

Where to Start

Serums are the most sensible entry point, since that's where formulas carry the highest concentration.

How Koreans Use It

Three habits worth borrowing.

Layer it early. PDRN serums go on after toner and before heavier creams, on slightly damp skin.

Pair it with a barrier cream. Korean routines treat PDRN as a recovery step, not a standalone. Following it with a ceramide or panthenol cream is standard.

Give it eight weeks. Barrier ingredients work on a slow timeline. Korean reviewers generally judge a PDRN product after two months, not two weeks.

A Realistic Expectation

Topical PDRN is a supportive ingredient, not a substitute for a clinical treatment, and claims that it rebuilds skin the way an injection does go further than the evidence. If you have a specific skin condition, a dermatologist is the right person to ask. What PDRN reliably offers is a gentle, well-tolerated way to help skin that's under stress, which in 2026 is most of us.
