Hi Daebak-Fam! November 11th is coming up, and if you spend any time in Korean convenience stores or supermarkets between mid-October and 빼빼로 데이 itself, you already know what to expect. Towers of Lotte's chocolate-dipped biscuit sticks by the front door. Custom gift baskets stacked halfway to the ceiling. TV spots with NewJeans (Lotte Wellfood's official Pepero ambassador since 2023) running every ad break. It looks chaotic, but there is a very specific industry machine behind all of it, and I want to walk you through why Pepero Day has become such a defining moment in Korea's retail calendar.

What Pepero Day Actually Is

빼빼로 (Pepero) is a thin cookie stick coated in chocolate, launched by Lotte Confectionery (now Lotte Wellfood) in 1983. On its own, it is a solid but unremarkable snack. What made it a phenomenon is the date. The four ones in 11/11 look like four Pepero sticks lined up, and that visual coincidence turned into a gift-giving custom that now drives roughly ₩300 to ₩500 billion in annual retail sales across the confectionery and gift categories. Korea Times reporting from 2024 confirmed that about 65 percent of total annual Pepero sales are concentrated on and around November 11 alone. Pepero Day now sits behind only Christmas and Valentine's Day in Korean gift-giving volume.

The Busan Middle-School Origin Story

The popular version of the origin is that Lotte manufactured Pepero Day as a top-down marketing campaign. That is only half true. The first documented media reference appeared in a Korean newspaper in November 1996, describing teenage girls in 경상도 (specifically North Gyeongsang Province, with strong ties to Busan-area high schools) who had already been exchanging Pepero on 11/11, wishing each other to grow "tall and thin like Pepero."

A Lotte Wellfood spokesperson later confirmed to Korean media that the tradition originated organically at the consumer level, and that regional sales reps in South Gyeongsang noticed the November spike before headquarters knew what was happening. Lotte capitalized in 1997 with a formal marketing push: free samples in major cities, TV ads, and POP displays across every retail channel. Sales grew roughly sevenfold in the following two decades. What is worth noting from an industry angle is how disciplined Lotte was about not claiming ownership. If Pepero Day had looked too corporate, the affection layer would have evaporated. Keeping the organic origin story in the brand narrative is why it still works.

Why It Beats Valentine's Day in Pure Retail Terms

Korea has an unusual density of couple holidays: Valentine's on 2/14, White Day on 3/14, and a monthly "14th" observance for pretty much every relationship stage. Pepero Day is now bigger than most of them from a retail-volume perspective, and the reason is scope. Valentine's Day in Korea is directional (women give men chocolate), which caps the audience. Pepero Day is horizontal. You give Pepero to friends, classmates, coworkers, your dentist, your boss, your favorite barista, and yes, your significant other. The 90년대 kids who started it were literally sharing snacks with the whole homeroom.

That expansion is the appeal point Lotte's marketing team openly credits. In a quote reported by Korea Times, the company noted, "Other snack-related anniversaries such as Valentine's Day are limited to lovers, but Pepero Day was relatively easy to establish because of its wide range of meaning and target age groups." Translation: the gift-volume ceiling per person is much higher when the recipient list is 30 people instead of one.

The Modern Gift Hierarchy

If you are new to this, here is the unwritten hierarchy Koreans follow almost instinctively:

  • Classmates and casual friends: a single basic box (₩1,500 to ₩3,000).
  • Coworkers and close friends: a mid-tier gift set or a specialty flavor like Nude, Almond, or the newer Calamansi Yogurt and Sweet Potato Double Dip variants.
  • Romantic partners: a premium bouquet, a custom-decorated Pepero cake, or one of the limited-edition collab boxes (recent years have featured K-drama IPs, K-pop groups, and Netflix Korea originals).

The premium tier is where 홈베이킹 (home baking) culture takes over. TikTok and Instagram are flooded with DIY 데코 Pepero from mid-October onward: hand-dipped chocolate sticks, pistachio-crusted variants, Pepero cakes topped with cream frosting and edible glitter, character-themed boxes. Convenience store chains like CU, GS25, and Emart24 stock 5x to 10x normal Pepero inventory during October and November to keep up. For a lot of teens, the actual gift now is the labor and the presentation, not the snack itself.

The Backlash, and Why Lotte Isn't Panicking

Since around 2020, Gen Z in Korea has pushed back on Pepero Day as a "manufactured holiday" and an unfair tax on single people. Twitter and 네이버 카페 threads regularly call it 상술 (a commercial gimmick). Some corners try to rebrand 11/11 as 가래떡 데이 (Rice Cake Day, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture) or ignore it entirely.

Lotte Wellfood is not sweating this. The Pepero SKU alone brings in an estimated ₩30 to ₩50 billion in annual revenue, and export sales overtook domestic sales for the first time in early 2024. The company has already pivoted to global growth. In 2024 they lit up the TSX Broadway LED in Times Square with a Pepero ad and ran the "Pepero 11 Reporter Squad" campaign, flying 10 international creators to Seoul to tour Lotte stores. Chairman Shin Dong-bin has publicly committed to turning Pepero into a "megabrand" by 2035. If you are wondering whether Korean confectionery is going to be as globally visible as Japanese Pocky within a decade, that is the bet Lotte is placing.

How to Celebrate Wherever You Are

If you are outside Korea, Pepero Day is a low-effort, high-warmth excuse to send something sweet to the Daebak-Fam in your life. Grab a mixed box of the classic four flavors (Original, Almond, Strawberry, White Cookie), or level up with newer variants like Nude Cheese, Melon, or Double Dip Sweet Potato. The really committed will build a homemade Pepero cake (Sue at My Korean Kitchen has a very forgiving 10-minute version using a Swiss roll base and melted chocolate) and hand-deliver it.

If you want to fold Pepero into a bigger snack care package that hits every Korean convenience-store category (ramyeon, jellies, chips, and hard-to-find confectionery), grab our SnackFever Box. It is the closest thing to a Korean 편의점 showing up at your door on 11/11.

Happy 빼빼로 데이, Daebak-Fam. Save one stick for yourself.
