Table of Contents

Sulwhasoo is Amorepacific's luxury skincare brand, built around Korean ginseng and herbal ingredients. A common first pick is the First Care Activating Serum, the brand's first-step serum applied right after cleansing. For a ginseng cream, look at the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream. For a simpler hydrating routine, the Essential Comfort line pairs a Balancing Water with a Balancing Emulsion.

Sulwhasoo has several lines, and the names are long. This guide sorts the products in our shop by routine step and skin concern. For how toners, serums and emulsions fit together, read the Korean skincare routine and Serum vs Essence vs Ampoule. For ginseng itself, see Korean ginseng and red ginseng explained.

At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, product details come from each Sulwhasoo product page and the brand's descriptions; the company facts come from the sources at the end. Many Sulwhasoo products list fragrance and plant extracts, so patch test any new product and stop if your skin reacts.

The brand in brief

The Korea JoongAng Daily reported in 2011 that Sulwhasoo was launched in Korea in 1997, that Amorepacific had patented an extract of effective ginseng components in 1972 and sold Ginseng Sammi, described as Korea's first ginseng-containing cosmetic, in 1973, and that Sulwhasoo's 2010 sales were 690 billion won. In 2016 the same newspaper reported that the brand's origins are traced to an Amorepacific ginseng cream that debuted in 1966, that Sulwhasoo had reached 1 trillion won in annual revenue the year before, and that it had opened a boutique in Sinsa-dong, Seoul, described as the largest single-brand cosmetics store in Korea. The Herald Business reported in September 2026 that Sulwhasoo operates more than 600 stores in 15 countries and had opened a pop-up at Isetan Shinjuku in Tokyo as part of its formal entry into Japan; the store counts and the Japan plans are the company's own statements.

First Care: the first step

The First Care Activating Serum is used after cleansing, three pumps pressed into damp skin morning and evening, before the rest of the routine. Its ingredient list begins with water and denatured alcohol and includes fragrance and fragrance-type ingredients such as limonene and linalool, so check the full list if you react to these. The First Care Eye Serum is the matching eye step.

Essential Comfort: the hydrating routine

The brand's directions are to pat the Balancing Water onto the face after the activating serum, then apply the Balancing Emulsion. The Essential Comfort Firming Cream is the cream in this line. The Balancing Water also lists denatured alcohol and fragrance. For how emulsions and creams differ, see the Korean moisturizer guide.

The Overnight Vitalizing Mask goes on as the last evening step and is rinsed off the next morning; see Korean sleeping masks. The UV Daily Essential Sunscreen is the last step before sun exposure; our Korean sunscreen guide covers how to apply Korean sunscreens.
