5 Must-Visit Islands in Korea: Nami, Ulleungdo, Ganghwa, Oedo and Jeju

Korea is a truly gorgeous country, with fascinating new things to see around every corner. Despite all the things to do on the mainland, did you know that there are a number of beautiful little islands just off the coast? From small, homely and relaxing, to slightly larger and filled with adventure, each one can fuel you up with excitement. Here are 5 of Korea's numerous islands that I suggest you visit during your stay.

1. Namiseom Island

This small, half-moon shaped island sits only 63 km away from the city of Seoul, making it a popular destination for families and couples. It is well known for its beautiful tree-lined roads that allow visitors to take relaxing strolls through calming, colorful nature. There is also a range of other activities to enjoy: water skiing, roller skating, glassblowing, pottery, ziplining, bus and boat tours, a small theme park, and plenty of quaint gift and craft shops.

2. Ulleungdo Island

Located in the East Sea, Ulleungdo is home to the glorious Bongnaepokpo Falls. These falls are not only a famous tourist attraction but also the only freshwater source for residents of the island. This stunning island was created from volcanic ash and lava, giving it dramatic features such as a range of high and low rocky cliffs. A variety of hiking trails allow tourists to experience as much of the island as possible, and sightseeing boats and fishing boats operate throughout the day. The scenery here truly is heavenly.

3. Ganghwa Island

Ganghwa Island, the fifth largest island in Korea, is located in the West Sea. It is home to a range of historical artifacts, including palaces and the famous Goindol dolmens, which date back to prehistoric times. The Goindol dolmens are graves built for the rulers of the island during the Bronze Age, and there are said to be around 80 stones across the island. There is also a fascinating Upside Down House, where the roof sits in the ground and the base faces the sky, created by an artist who wanted to challenge the idea that everything has to be upright. Do not worry though, the interior is right side up. Once again, this island delivers amazing scenery and quirky attractions that are definitely worth a visit.

4. Oedo Island

If you want to be immersed in the beautiful scenes of nature, then make sure to give this island a visit. A long time ago, this island consisted only of unattractive rock and dirt. However, in 1969, a man named Lee Chang-Ho and his wife traveled here in their boat and decided to fill the island with color and life. From this came the beautiful Oedo Botania, a gorgeous botanical garden with uniquely shaped trees and plants of all shapes and sizes. By the summertime, a variety of gorgeous flowers grow and display their magnificent colors to amaze tourists. What is more, the garden overlooks the gorgeous blue sea that surrounds the island, a truly serene place to visit. It is safe to say this island is a whole masterpiece.

5. Jeju Island

And finally, the island that everyone has heard of: Jeju. This place is one of the largest tourist destinations in Korea and has even been designated as a Special Tourist Zone by the Korean Government. There are countless things to do, from staying local and browsing gift shops to gathering souvenirs for the family, casual exploring across wide-open landscapes, and hiking the gorgeous hills of Jeju. The unique climate here means there are a variety of interesting plants, and of course, a stunning view of the surrounding ocean is never far away.
