An unforgettable journey of culture, diving, and seafood.

When South Korea comes to mind, K-pop and K-dramas usually take the spotlight. But that’s only one side of the story. Beyond this modern wave, there’s a much older and quieter tradition: the Haenyeo culture of Jeju Island.

Haenyeo are female free divers who have lived from the sea for generations. They dive 10-20 meters without oxygen tanks, collecting seafood in a single breath. It sounds demanding and it is but for them, it’s part of everyday life. Many start training young and continue into their 70s or even 80s, relying less on equipment and more on experience.

More than just a profession, it reflects resilience, shared responsibility, and a way of life shaped alongside nature, not against it. In 2016, it was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Even today, traces of this tradition are still visible across Jeju  in coastal villages, local food, and cultural spaces. It’s not something that exists only in the past. In many ways, it’s still quietly present.

So if you’re visiting Jeju, the question is simple: where can you actually experience this culture for yourself?
