For Kim Tschang-Yeul's children, art was not something that existed separately from everyday life. It was woven into the fabric of their home.

"My earliest memories of my father are of him painting," his son recalls. "He worked at home, so we constantly saw him in his studio. He painted from morning until night and was completely absorbed in his work."

Watching his father dedicate himself so fully to painting left a lasting impression. More than anything, it demonstrated an extraordinary work ethic that would become one of the most important lessons he passed on to his family.

To many people, Kim Tschang-Yeul appeared quiet, reserved, and entirely devoted to his art. However, his son describes a very different side of the artist.

"His public image was very focused on his work, which made him seem somewhat withdrawn from the world. But in reality, he was an incredibly curious person."

Whether attending plays, watching films, reading books, or exploring new cultural experiences, Kim Tschang-Yeul maintained a lifelong desire to learn and discover.

"He always had a thirst for new things," his son explains.

That curiosity extended beyond art. Alongside his passion for culture, he was also deeply devoted to his family.

"My father became a parent relatively late in life, so he truly cherished family. He was a very strong family man."

The Meaning Behind the Water Drops

Few images are more closely associated with Korean contemporary art than Kim Tschang-Yeul's water droplets. For decades, the artist painted seemingly perfect droplets resting upon canvases, books, calligraphy, and other surfaces.

According to his son, the official meaning behind the water drops was deeply personal.

"Water represented purity and healing for him. It symbolized both tears and cleansing water—something capable of washing away pain and trauma."

Much of that trauma stemmed from the Korean War. As a young man, Kim Tschang-Yeul witnessed immense loss, including the deaths of many of his friends.

The water droplets became a way of processing those memories and transforming suffering into something peaceful and beautiful.

The Moment Everything Changed

One of the most fascinating stories behind Kim Tschang-Yeul's career occurred during his early years in Paris.

At the time, he was struggling financially and living in a converted stable that served as both his home and studio. Because he could not always afford new canvases, he often reused old ones by washing away previous paintings.

One evening, after spraying water onto a canvas and leaving it outside overnight, he returned the next morning to a remarkable sight.

"As the dawn light hit the droplets that remained on the canvas, he experienced a moment of enlightenment," his son explains.

That moment would change the course of his artistic career.

From then on, the water droplet became the defining motif of his work.

The experience was later commemorated in a painting created around 1970–71 titled What Happened That Night?, which can be viewed today at the Kim Tschang-Yeul Museum in Jeju Island.

Although Kim Tschang-Yeul spent significant portions of his career abroad, his work remained deeply connected to Korean and East Asian cultural traditions.

His son notes that his father's paintings combined Eastern philosophical ideas with Western artistic techniques.

"His work is often associated with Buddhism and Taoism because of its emphasis on contemplation and simplicity."

Beginning in the 1990s, Kim Tschang-Yeul also began incorporating Chinese characters into his paintings, often drawing inspiration from the Thousand Character Classic (천자문), a text he studied during childhood while learning Chinese characters.

This blending of Eastern philosophy, personal history, and contemporary painting helped introduce Korean artistic perspectives to audiences around the world.

When asked how he hopes younger generations will remember his father, the answer is simple.

"I hope people continue to love and appreciate his work."

Beyond their visual beauty, Kim Tschang-Yeul's paintings continue to resonate because of the emotions they evoke.

"People can view the water drops as symbols of purity and clarity. They have a soothing effect, and many people find comfort simply by looking at them."

His son also believes the paintings offer an important lesson in resilience.

Behind every water droplet lies a story of hardship, perseverance, and transformation—a reminder that beauty can emerge even from painful experiences.

Among his favorite memories is a story from Kim Tschang-Yeul's youth during the Japanese occupation of Korea.

While on a school field trip, a Japanese teacher mocked the Korean students while standing beside a wide river with a strong current. According to the teacher, Koreans were too weak to swim across it.

Determined to prove him wrong, the young Kim Tschang-Yeul dove into the water and successfully swam across the river. Then he swam back.

The story perfectly captures the determination, courage, and quiet confidence that would define his life.
