Here is the hot take from someone who watched HYBE's promotion machine from up close in 2021: Butter was not just a song, it was a business plan wearing sunglasses. Released May 21, 2021 as 방탄소년단's second all-English single after Dynamite the year before, this disco-pop 히트곡 was engineered to do one thing, hold the summer, and it did that so thoroughly that the industry is still copying the playbook. Ten non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the longest run for any Asian act in the chart's history, and the only interruption was BTS's own Permission to Dance. That is not luck. That is a Korean label running a US-market strategy with better inputs than most US labels had at the time.

Why Butter was a calculated bet, not a lucky follow-up

Dynamite in August 2020 was the proof of concept. All-English lyrics, disco-pop production, Bruno Mars-adjacent groove, and the first No. 1 on the Hot 100 for a Korean act. What Big Hit (now HYBE) figured out from that release was surgical: American radio programmers will spin an English-language 컴백 by a Korean group if the song sounds like a Silk Sonic B-side and the choreo is short enough to loop on a phone screen. Butter doubled down. Producer Rob Grimaldi and songwriter Stephen Kirk led a hybrid US-Korean team that stripped Dynamite's brass down to a leaner bass-and-clap groove, dropped the tempo just enough to feel cooler, and slapped a hook (smooth like butter, like a criminal undercover) that a non-English-speaking listener could sing after one play. That is not accidental. That is production engineered to bypass the language barrier.

The appeal point Western critics missed: 방탄 fans do not want the song to be lyrically deep. They want the song to be shareable. Butter delivered a chorus that a Peruvian ARMY, a Filipino streamer, and a New Jersey radio DJ could all repeat correctly on first listen. That is worth more to a Hot 100 campaign than any three-minute rap verse in Korean.

The chart numbers, decoded

Butter debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 the week of June 12, 2021 with 32.2 million US streams, 242,800 downloads, and 18.1 million radio-airplay audience impressions. That download number is the number nobody talks about, and it is the whole story. Digital single sales at $1.29 a pop had been a dead category for years for American pop stars. ARMY revived it as a fandom tool. Big Hit dropped Butter in 11 different digital versions (Hotter Remix, Cooler Remix, Sweeter Remix, instrumental, and multiple physical CD variants) and Korean fans mobilized on Weverse to stream, buy, and re-buy. Billboard's methodology counts downloads at a much higher weight per unit than streams, and that is the trick that put Butter over Olivia Rodrigo's Drivers License for longest No. 1 of 2021.

The physical single was its own operation. Korean-market Butter CDs moved 2.42 million copies in the first week per Hanteo Chart, a figure most K-pop groups do not hit for a full-length album, let alone a single. That is fandom infrastructure doing what US labels forgot how to build.

Butter x McDonald's: the case study business schools should teach

Five days after Butter dropped, McDonald's launched the BTS Meal in 50 countries (eventually 90+). Purple packaging, I Purple You lettering, 10-piece McNuggets, and two sauces (Cajun and Sweet Chili) pulled straight from the Korean McDonald's menu. This is not a music campaign with a fast-food tie-in. This is a fast-food campaign wrapped around a music release, timed so that every trip to a drive-thru functioned as a promotional impression. In some Indonesian and Chinese cities, riot-level crowds shut down stores. HYBE's internal read (I heard this from a Big Hit-adjacent friend at the time): the campaign generated somewhere north of ₩1 trillion in downstream retail impact between meal sales, merch tie-ins, and the halo effect on Butter streaming.

The industry insight most Americans still miss: HYBE was not being paid by McDonald's the way Travis Scott was paid for his meal deal. This was a co-marketing partnership structured so both sides won on their own KPIs. BTS wanted an American mainstream footprint that transcended music-press coverage. McDonald's wanted Gen Z back into stores post-COVID. Both got exactly what they wanted, and the deal became the template every K-pop label now pitches to Western brands.

The Grammy nomination that mattered more than the loss

Butter got a Best Pop Duo/Group Performance nomination at the 64th Grammy Awards in April 2022. It lost to Doja Cat and SZA's Kiss Me More, and Korean media treated the loss as a snub. Insider read: the nomination itself was the win. It was BTS's second consecutive Grammy nod after Dynamite, and it locked in Butter's status as a chart-eligible, industry-recognized crossover, not a novelty. That distinction matters for streaming algorithms, US radio rotation, and long-tail catalog value years after release. The Butter MV is now past 1.1 billion YouTube views. That is not a fluke number. That is what a legitimated crossover looks like at maturity.

What Butter set up, and what happened next

Butter closed a specific chapter. In 2022, BTS pivoted to the Yet To Come single and the Proof anthology album, then held their Yet to Come in Busan free concert on October 15, 2022 in support of Busan's World Expo 2030 bid, drawing 50,000 in-person attendees and roughly 49 million online viewers. That was their last full-group activity before mandatory military service. Jin and j-hope completed their duty in 2024. RM, Suga, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook were discharged in 2025. The group is now back and just announced a 79-show world tour for April 2026 through March 2027, the biggest global K-pop tour ever staged, with a new album on March 20.

My honest read: Butter is the record that made the 2026 comeback tour physically bookable at stadium scale in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Without Butter, BTS is a big K-pop group with a passionate niche. With Butter's ten weeks at No. 1, BTS is a permanent tier-one global act on the same commercial line as Coldplay and Taylor Swift. That is what those ten weeks actually purchased. Not a chart trophy. A ceiling that no Korean act had ever cleared, and that every K-pop label from HYBE to SM to JYP now uses as the baseline benchmark for what a Western-market push should aim for.
