Korea may not be a traditionally Christian country, but it celebrates Christmas with more lights, trees, and giant LED screens than almost anywhere in Asia. From late November through the New Year, cities and gardens transform into glowing winter wonderlands, and Christmas Eve becomes a romantic date night for couples and a magical evening out for families.

If you find yourself in Korea between December and early March, these are the three holiday attractions worth building your itinerary around. Each one offers a completely different flavor of Korean Christmas, from countryside lights to high-tech department store façades to theme park parades.

1. Garden of Morning Calm Lighting Festival (Gapyeong)

About two hours northeast of Seoul, the Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do hosts the most iconic winter light festival in Korea. The 2025-2026 Lighting Festival runs from December 5, 2025 to March 15, 2026, and was the first event in the country to blend natural garden landscapes with large-scale LED illumination. Once the sun sets after 5 p.m., the entire 330,000-square-meter arboretum glows in rainbow hues across themed sections like Hakyung Garden, Hometown House Garden, Sunken Garden, and the Garden of Eden.

Highlights include the Metasequoia Pathway, a glowing tunnel of evergreens that doubles as the festival's most photographed spot, plus glowing arches, illuminated horse-and-carriage sculptures, and Starlight Hill, which gives you a panoramic view of the whole garden. The romantic atmosphere, especially when snow blankets the ground in February, has made it a favorite Christmas Eve date for Korean couples.

Tickets cost 11,000 won for adults, 8,500 won for teenagers, and 7,500 won for children. The easiest way to get there from Seoul is the Gyeongchun subway line or ITX train to Cheongpyeong Station, followed by the Gapyeong City Tour Bus. Many Seoul-based day tours pair the lights with Nami Island or Petite France, which makes it an easy single-day trip if you do not have a rental car.

2. Shinsegae Square Media Façade (Myeong-dong, Seoul)

If your holiday plans keep you in central Seoul, the Shinsegae Square media façade on the main Shinsegae Department Store in Myeong-dong is unmissable. For the 2025 season, running from November 7, 2025 through January 31, 2026, the building's entire front wall is wrapped in a Samsung 8K anamorphic LED screen measuring 71.8 meters wide and 17.9 meters tall, powered by an extraordinary 3.75 million LED chips. Every evening from 5 p.m. to midnight, it plays a three-minute Christmas show called "The Magical World Connecting Time," set to carols recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

The display has become such a phenomenon that crowds line the Sogong-ro crosswalks every night to snap photos. For a warm indoor view, grab a window seat at the Starbucks Central Post Office branch directly across the street. Inside the Myeong-dong store, the Shinsegae Wonderland Christmas market on the 4th floor sells limited-edition ornaments, holiday snacks, and decorations that you can only find here through December 30. From the Shinsegae façade, it is a five-minute walk to the Lotte Department Store main store and the Cheonggyecheon stream, where you can extend the night by exploring the Seoul Lantern Festival lights along the water.

3. Lotte World Tower and Lotte World Adventure (Jamsil, Seoul)

Jamsil is the all-in-one stop for visitors who want to pack Christmas markets, light shows, and a full-day theme park into one trip. Outside Lotte World Tower, the Lotte Town Christmas Market unfolds across the 800-pyeong World Park plaza from November 20, 2025 to January 4, 2026. The market features 52 brands selling handmade crafts and ornaments, mulled wine, a giant illuminated Christmas tree, and a double-decker carousel that holds 30 people. Don't miss the Heart Light Show and the Snow Shower, an artificial snowfall that drops over visitors throughout the evening and packed nearly 400,000 guests in last year alone.

Right next door, Lotte World Adventure runs its Twinkle Miracle Winter festival from November 22, 2025 to March 2, 2026. The theme park transforms into a sparkling snowflake playground, with photo zones like the Crystal Snow Gate, Twinkle Winter Village, and Miracle Snow Road on the bridge to Magic Island. The iconic Magic Castle is wrapped in red and green lights with snow-shower visual effects, and at 8:40 p.m. each evening a six-minute media art show fills the castle with swirling colors and fireworks. The Lotty's Christmas Fantasy parade rolls through Adventure 1F on weekends and holidays at 5 p.m., featuring Santa, dancers, and the park's mascots.

For the full Jamsil Christmas day, start at Lotte World Adventure when it opens at 10 a.m., break for shopping inside Lotte World Mall in the afternoon, then head out to World Park for the evening Christmas Market and the night view of Lotte World Tower lit up against the Seoul skyline.

Planning Your Korea Christmas Trip

If you can manage all three, the ideal Korea Christmas itinerary spreads them across separate evenings. Spend one night in Jamsil for Lotte's lights and the theme park, one night in Myeong-dong for the Shinsegae façade and a stroll up Cheonggyecheon stream, and reserve a full day for the Garden of Morning Calm in Gapyeong, ideally combined with Nami Island earlier in the afternoon. Pack thermals: temperatures in Gapyeong can drop well below freezing on December nights, and most of the magic happens outside.

The good news is that Korea's Christmas season runs longer than most countries'. Garden of Morning Calm lights stay on until March, the Lotte and Shinsegae displays continue through January, and even quieter pockets like Cheonggyecheon's Seoul Lantern Festival extend the holiday glow well past December 25.
