K-pop superstars are not only known for their original hits but also for transforming global classics into something completely their own. From soulful ballads to energetic stage covers, Korean idols have reinterpreted some of the most iconic songs in modern music. Here are 10 amazing K-pop covers, from Jonghyun's Spanish ballad to SHINee's Lady Gaga performance, that prove just how versatile Korea's biggest stars really are.

Sign of the Times: Kim Woo-sung and Lee Chan-sol

Harry Styles' first solo hit after One Direction's split, "Sign of the Times" (2017), captured the hearts of Directioners everywhere. On the Korean show "Superband," a project that searches for hidden musical talent, The Rose's lead singer Kim Woo-sung teamed up with solo singer Lee Chan-sol for a stripped-back cover featuring only keyboard and guitar. Woo-sung's distinct indie voice blends seamlessly with Chan-sol's clear tone, creating a beautifully balanced rendition that builds from soft to soaring. It is a performance full of emotion, passion, and raw vocal talent.

Creep: Ha Hyun-sang, I'll, Hong Jin-ho, and Kim Hyun-woo

Radiohead's "Creep" (1993) is one of the most melancholic and most covered songs in modern rock history. Few covers have come close to projecting the raw emotion of the original, but these "Superband" contestants put up a serious fight. Solo singer Ha Hyun-sang controls his voice masterfully, holding back in the quieter parts before unleashing in the final stretch. I'll provides a haunting keyboard backbone with chilling harmonies, while cellist Hong Jin-ho and Kim Hyun-woo on double bass deepen the song's melancholic atmosphere. The result is one of the most memorable Korean covers of a Western classic.

Y, ¿Si Fuera Ella?: Jonghyun

"Y, ¿Si Fuera Ella?" (1997) is a Spanish song by singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz, often considered an unofficial national anthem of Spain. SHINee's Jonghyun wrote a Korean version of this song, telling a similarly heartbreaking story of a man longing for the woman he lost. Jonghyun's honey-like voice fits the song perfectly. He opens the track quietly, almost whispering to a sleeping lover, before letting the dramatic build land with full force. In 2015, six years after the cover was released, Alejandro Sanz himself tweeted about the version, linking the Spanish music world to the Korean one in a beautiful full-circle moment.

Hey Jude: Young K and Dowoon

The Beatles are adored around the world, and "Hey Jude" (1968) is one of their most recognized singles. DAY6's Young K covered this classic during a live KBS2 Radio session with bandmate Dowoon. Young K's clear, perfectly controlled voice does the song every bit of justice, while Dowoon's funky cajon beats and warm backing vocals add a personal twist that the original Beatles would have appreciated. It is a cover that respects the source material while still feeling distinctly DAY6.

I Will Always Love You: Ailee

"I Will Always Love You" (1974) was originally written and performed by Dolly Parton, then later popularized by Whitney Houston for the film "The Bodyguard." Ailee delivers a version that is both faithful to the source and entirely her own. The song's enormous vocal range is no challenge for her: she is just as powerful in the lower register as she is in the soaring high notes. She also fearlessly tackles the famous key change, and even adds another of her own. It is the kind of cover that reminds you why Ailee is widely considered one of K-pop's strongest vocalists.

Halo: Hyolyn

"Halo" (2009) was written specifically for Beyoncé's legendary voice, often described as a fusion of soul and gospel. That heritage does not intimidate Hyolyn one bit. Without a traditional soul or gospel background, she still manages to fill every note with strength and feeling, performing the song with the kind of passion that proves she loves it. You can see the love translate in every line, and her rendition has rightfully gone down as one of the most impressive K-pop covers of a Western anthem.

Father: Bada and Insooni

"Father" (2017), originally performed by Insooni, is an emotional song about a girl singing to her father. The story is even more touching when you learn that Insooni's father was African American, and that being mixed race in Korea brought many hardships into her life. On "Fantastic Duo 2," a Korean TV singing show where Insooni served as a judge, Bada performed the song alongside her. Bada's clear voice and Insooni's soulful harmonies combined into one of the most moving moments in Korean TV history. Bada literally breaks down in tears mid-song yet keeps her voice in complete control, and audience members are visibly moved alongside her.

Empire State of Mind: Choa, Hyejeong, and Yuna

Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" (2009) is an anthem dedicated to one of the world's most iconic cities. When AOA members Choa, Hyejeong, and Yuna performed the song in New York City in 2015, the moment became part of K-pop history. Choa's powerful vocals, Hyejeong's distinctive and well-controlled tone, and Yuna's charmingly soft delivery blend into a beautiful three-part harmony. It is a cover that captures the spirit of New York while showcasing the chemistry of a K-pop group at their best. Alicia Keys herself would be proud.

Flashlight: A.C.E

"Flashlight" (2015) was written by Jessie J for the film "Pitch Perfect," and the song demands precise vocal control and an impressive range. The members of A.C.E meet every challenge head-on. Each member has their own strength but never tries to outshine the others, with the group constantly supporting one another through backing vocals. The teamwork on display turns a complex song into a moving four-part performance, and it is one of the clearest examples of how K-pop's vocal groups elevate cover songs through harmony and arrangement.

Just Dance: SHINee

Last but certainly not least is SHINee's cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" (2008), one of the most memorable songs of the late 2000s. The mix of techno-effected vocals, sharp choreography, flashy outfits, and razor-tight group coordination delivered an unforgettable performance that reinforced SHINee's reputation as the "Princes of K-pop." It is still hard to watch this cover without wishing Lady Gaga had eventually returned the favor with a SHINee collaboration. The stage presence alone would have been incredible.

Bonus K-pop Covers and Final Thoughts

This wraps up our list of 10 amazing covers by K-pop superstars, but the world of K-pop covers is much bigger than ten songs. A few other notable favorites include DAY6's take on "Despacito," Bada's emotional rendition of "My Heart Will Go On," and The Rose's cozy cover of Bruno Mars' "Marry You." Highlight also delivered a hilarious cover of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" that is still loved by fans today. There is an enormous variety out there, and these covers show just how globally aware and musically curious the K-pop industry has become.

Whether you prefer the originals or the K-pop reinterpretations is up to you, but one thing is clear: when Korean superstars take on a beloved song, they bring something fresh, emotional, and uniquely Korean to the performance.
