This book examines relations between China and the Soviet Union during the 1950s, and provides an insight into Chinese thinking about the Korean War.
This volume is based on a translation of Shen Zihua's best-selling Chinese-language book, which broke the mainland Chinese taboo on publishing non-heroic accounts of the Korean War.The author combined information detailed in Soviet-era diplomatic documents (released after the collapse of the Soviet Union) with Chinese memoirs, official document collections and scholarly monographs, in order to present a non-ideological, realpolitik account of the relations, motivations and actions among three Communist actors: Stalin, Mao Zedong and Kim Il-sung.
This new translation represents a revisionist perspective on trilateral Communist alliance relations during the Korean War, shedding new light on the origins of the Sino-Soviet split and the rather distant relations between China and North Korea. It features a critical introduction to Shen's work and the text is based on original archival research not found in earlier books in English.
This book will be of much interest to students of Communist China, Stalinist Russia, the Korean War, Cold War Studies and International History in general.
Author Biography
Author Shen Zhihua is professor of history at East China Normal University and Director of the Cold War History Studies Center on the Shanghai campus. He is also an adjunct professor of history at Peking University. He is author of several books on the cold war in Chinese.
Translator and Editor Neil Silver is a retired U.S. diplomat who worked in, on and around China. He served in embassies in Beijing, Tokyo, and Moscow, including as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs in Beijing and Tokyo, and, in the State Department, worked on Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian affairs.

Q. When will my subscription box ship?
Our subscription and curated boxes (Daebak Box, Daebak K-Beauty Box, SnackFever, and Collab Box) ship right after a 2–3 business day processing period from the time your order is placed.
Q. How do recurring subscriptions work?
For recurring subscriptions, your next order is automatically created exactly 3 months after your original order date. Once that order is generated, it ships after the same 2–3 business day processing period.
Q. ⚠️ Important: Can I order products from different brands together?
Please order items from the same brand together, and avoid mixing different brands in a single order.
Each Korean brand we carry uses its own shipping carrier, so combining products from different brands in one order may result in higher shipping costs. For example, Brand A may ship via FedEx while Brand B ships via Korea Post, meaning a mixed order is handled as separate shipments.
To keep your shipping costs as low as possible, we recommend placing a separate order for each brand.

We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it: unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You'll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.
Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.
⚠️ Important: Brand Products (Non-Box Items)
For individual brand products (all items other than our boxes, such as Daebak Box, Daebak Beauty Box, SnackFever, and Collab Box), returns, exchanges, and refunds are handled directly by the respective Korean brand. Once you contact us, we will connect you with the relevant brand and share their instructions, as each brand manages its own return and shipping process.
How to Start a Return
To start a return, please contact us at hello@daebak.co.
If your return is accepted, we will provide return shipping instructions, including where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.
Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer, unless the item is defective, damaged, or incorrect.
Damages and Issues
Please inspect your order upon arrival and contact us immediately if the item is defective or damaged, or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.
Exceptions / Non-Returnable Items
Due to hygiene and safety reasons, personal care goods, including beauty and skincare products, cannot be returned once opened or used.
For curated or mystery-style products, including Daebak Beauty Boxes, returns are only accepted if the entire box is unopened and all items remain unused, sealed, and in their original packaging.
The following items are also non-returnable:
- Custom products (such as special orders or personalized items)
- Perishable goods (such as food, flowers, or plants)
- Hazardous materials, flammable liquids, or gases
- Sale items

Exchanges
The fastest way to get what you want is to return the item you have. Once the return is accepted, you can make a separate purchase for the new item.
European Union 14-Day Cooling-Off Period
Notwithstanding the above, if your merchandise is being shipped into the European Union, you have the right to cancel or return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without justification. As above, your item must be in the same condition that you received it: unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You'll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.
Refunds
We will notify you once we've received and inspected your return, and let you know whether the refund was approved. If approved, you'll be automatically refunded to your original payment method within 10 business days. Please remember that it can also take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund.
