by Christopher Hanscom (Author)

In what ways can or should art engage with its social context? Authors, readers, and critics have been preoccupied with this question since the dawn of modern literature in Korea. Advocates of social engagement have typically focused on realist texts, seeing such works as best suited to represent injustices and inequalities by describing them as if they were before our very eyes.

Christopher P. Hanscom questions this understanding of political art by examining four figures central to recent Korean fiction, film, and public discourse: the migrant laborer, the witness to or survivor of state violence, the refugee, and the socially excluded urban precariat. Instead of making these marginalized figures intelligible to common sense, this book reveals the capacity of art to address the "impossible speech" of those who are not asked, expected, or allowed to put forward their thoughts, yet who in so doing expand the limits of the possible.

Impossible Speech proposes a new approach to literature and film that foregrounds ostensibly "nonpolitical" or nonsensical moments, challenging assumptions about the relationship between politics and art that locate the "politics" of the work in the representation of content understood in advance as being political. Recasting the political as a struggle over the possibility or impossibility of speech itself, this book finds the politics of a work of art in its power to confront the boundaries of what is sayable.

To see exactly how much shipping costs and how long it takes to reach your country, just click Calculate and see the shipping cost below the Add to Cart button.

Q. When will my subscription box ship?

Our subscription and curated boxes (Daebak Box, Daebak K-Beauty Box, SnackFever, and Collab Box) ship right after a 2–3 business day processing period from the time your order is placed.

Q. How do recurring subscriptions work?

For recurring subscriptions, your next order is automatically created exactly 3 months after your original order date. Once that order is generated, it ships after the same 2–3 business day processing period.

Q. ⚠️ Important: Can I order products from different brands together?

Please order items from the same brand together, and avoid mixing different brands in a single order.

Each Korean brand we carry uses its own shipping carrier, so combining products from different brands in one order may result in higher shipping costs. For example, Brand A may ship via FedEx while Brand B ships via Korea Post, meaning a mixed order is handled as separate shipments.

To keep your shipping costs as low as possible, we recommend placing a separate order for each brand.

Returns & Refunds

Returns

We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it: unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You'll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.

Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

⚠️ Important: Brand Products (Non-Box Items)

For individual brand products (all items other than our boxes, such as Daebak Box, Daebak Beauty Box, SnackFever, and Collab Box), returns, exchanges, and refunds are handled directly by the respective Korean brand. Once you contact us, we will connect you with the relevant brand and share their instructions, as each brand manages its own return and shipping process.
