In Korean skincare, essence, serum and ampoule are all treatment steps used after toner and before cream. An essence is the lightest and most watery, a serum is more concentrated and targeted, and an ampoule is the most concentrated, often sold in a small bottle. You do not need all three; most people use one or two.
The three words confuse almost everyone, partly because brands use them loosely. There is no legal definition, so a product called a "serum" in one line can be thinner than an "essence" in another. What follows is the way the words are generally used in Korea, which is the most useful rule of thumb when you are reading labels.
At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, this is one of the questions we get most from people building their first routine. For where these steps sit in the full order, see The Korean Skincare Routine, Simplified.
The three at a glance
| Essence | Serum | Ampoule | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texture | Watery or lightly gel-like | Gel or light lotion | Thicker, sometimes oily or viscous |
| Concentration | Lowest | Medium to high | Highest |
| Typical bottle | Larger (100 to 150 ml is common) | 30 to 50 ml | Small, often with a dropper |
| Main job | Hydrate and prep after toner | Target one concern | Short, intensive boost |
| How often | Daily, morning and night | Daily or as directed | As directed; often a course of weeks |
Essence
An essence is the step closest to a toner. In older Korean routines it was the "first essence" applied right after cleansing, and some brands still make watery essences meant to be used that way. Today most essences are used after toner to add a layer of hydration before heavier products.
Examples in our shop: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, the clear snail essence that many people know from social media; mixsoon Bean Essence, a thicker fermented-soybean essence that mixsoon suggests using in a very small amount; and Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water, which is watery enough to double as a toner.

Serum
A serum is the targeted step. It carries a higher concentration of one or two active ingredients and is chosen for a specific goal: hydration, dark spots, texture, redness. Most Korean serums come in 30 to 50 ml bottles with a dropper or pump and are used once or twice a day.
Examples: Torriden Dive-In Serum, a hyaluronic acid hydration serum and a frequent award winner in Korea; and goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Dark Spot Care Serum, a vitamin C serum marketed for dark spot care. If niacinamide is the active you are after, see Niacinamide in Korean Skincare.

Ampoule
"Ampoule" comes from the sealed glass vials used in clinics. In Korean skincare it means the most concentrated version of a treatment, often sold in a smaller bottle and sometimes meant to be used as a course, for example every night for a few weeks, then paused. Some brands also sell larger "ampoules" that are really daily serums; the name signals strength more than size.
Example: SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule, a single-ingredient centella ampoule that is light enough to use every day. The brand sells it in several sizes, which shows how flexible the word has become.

What order do you use them in?
The Korean rule is thin to thick. After cleansing and toner:
- Essence (watery)
- Serum or ampoule (more concentrated)
- Cream or lotion to seal
- Sunscreen in the morning
If you use both a serum and an ampoule, apply the thinner one first and let each layer absorb for a minute. Using more than two treatment steps rarely adds much and raises the chance of irritation, so start with one.
Do you need all three?
No. A simple routine is toner, one treatment step, cream, sunscreen. Choose the treatment step by what you want:
- Just more hydration: an essence is enough.
- One specific concern: a serum.
- A short, intensive phase: an ampoule, then back to your usual serum.
Brand products in our shop are shipped by the brands. If you prefer to try several Korean products without choosing each one, the Daebak K-Beauty Box is a separate, curated option.
FAQ
Is an essence the same as a toner?
No, but they are close. A toner is used first to rebalance skin after cleansing. An essence comes after and adds a light layer of hydration. Some watery essences can replace a toner. For toner types, see Korean Toner Types.
Can I use a serum and an ampoule together?
Yes. Apply the thinner one first. If both contain strong actives such as retinol or acids, use them on different days rather than layering.
Which is stronger, serum or ampoule?
Usually the ampoule, but it depends on the brand. Read the ingredient list and directions rather than relying on the name.
Can an ampoule be used every day?
Many can. Follow the product's directions; some are designed as a course of a few weeks, others as daily serums.
