Walk into any beauty shop in Seoul and look at the toner aisle. A large share of the shelf is not bottles anymore. It is tubs of pre-soaked pads, 50, 60 or 80 to a tub, stacked in rows.

Toner pads are one of the easiest ways into Korean skincare, because there is almost nothing to learn. This guide covers what they are, how to use them, the main types, and which ones we stock.

What a Korean Toner Pad Is

A toner pad is a round cotton or fiber disc soaked in toner or essence. You open the tub, take one out, and wipe it across your face. There is no bottle to pour and no cotton round to wet, so it takes about ten seconds.

Most pads sit in a thin layer of liquid in the tub. How much liquid, and how thick the pad is, changes how the product feels, which is why two pads from different brands can behave very differently.

Smooth Side, Textured Side

Many pads have two different sides. One is smooth and soft for hydrating and calming. The other is textured, with a light grain meant to give a gentle wipe. If a brand does this, it usually says so on the tub.

If your skin is easily irritated, stay on the smooth side, or skip textured pads until you know how your skin reacts.

How to Use a Toner Pad

After cleansing, take one pad and swipe it gently over your face, starting from the center and moving outward. Use the smooth side. Do not rub hard.

Many people then pat the rest of the liquid in with their hands and move on to serum. Pads are not a replacement for the rest of your routine. They sit where a toner would go. If you want the full order, see our Korean skincare routine guide.

The Pad Mask Trick

A popular Korean habit is to use a pad as a quick mask. You split the pad in half horizontally, or place a whole pad on a spot you want to focus on, and leave it for a few minutes.

Check the tub first. Some pads are made for a quick wipe only, and brands that recommend leaving them on say so. Don't leave an exfoliating pad on your face unless the label says you can.

Three Types of Pads

Hydrating and calming pads. The gentlest group. Good if you are new to pads or your skin feels dry or reactive.

Brightening pads. These usually contain vitamin C or similar ingredients that brands pair with the idea of an even-looking tone. They work best used consistently, and they work best with sunscreen. Our sunscreen guide covers that side.

Pore and exfoliating pads. These often contain acids such as BHA or PHA. Start with one or two nights a week, patch test first, and wear sunscreen the next morning. If skin stings, stop.

An Honest Note on Pads

Pads are convenient, and that convenience has a cost. They are single use, so a tub empties fast, and the discs are waste. A bottle of toner and a reusable cotton round is cheaper per use and produces less trash.

We think pads are worth it when you want speed or a specific active that is easy to dose in pad form. If you like your bottle toner, you don't need to switch.

Storing Your Pads

Close the lid firmly after every use, and keep the tub out of direct sun. A pad that dries out loses most of what makes it useful. Use clean hands or the tweezers some brands include to take pads out.
