Table of Contents

Vitamin C in Korean skincare is usually a lower-strength, gentler version of the ingredient than the 15 to 20 percent serums common in the West, designed to be used every morning under sunscreen. Korean brands market it for dark spots and dullness. The most-bought example is goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Dark Spot Care Serum; Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop is the classic pure-vitamin-C option.

Vitamin C is the ingredient people most often ask about after retinol, and the Korean take on it is different enough to deserve its own guide. Where Western serums compete on strength, Korean ones compete on tolerability: lower percentages, stabler forms, and textures you can wear daily. This guide explains the forms you will see on a label, how Koreans fit vitamin C into a routine, and which products to look at.

At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, product descriptions come from the brands. "Marketed for dark spots" means that is what the brand designed the product for, not a promise of results. Patch test any new active. The ingredient facts come from the Linus Pauling Institute's review of vitamin C and skin, listed at the end.

Forms of vitamin C on Korean labels

Label name What it is What to expect
Ascorbic acid (L-ascorbic acid) Pure vitamin C Most direct; can sting; oxidizes and darkens over time
3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid A stable derivative Gentler; common in Korean serums
Ascorbyl glucoside Vitamin C bound to glucose Very gentle and stable; lower potency
Sodium ascorbyl phosphate A salt form Gentle; often in products for blemish-prone skin
Green tangerine, yuja, sea buckthorn extract Plant extracts naturally rich in vitamin C Mild; often paired with a derivative above

The trade-off behind this table is real. The Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, which maintains a research review on vitamin C and skin, notes that ascorbic acid is the most effective form for topical use but the least stable in solution, that it degrades slowly with exposure to air, heat or light, and that stable derivatives such as ascorbate phosphate are considered to have limited permeability. It also notes that the human studies it cites used concentrations between 0.6 and 10 percent, which is closer to the Korean range than to the strongest Western serums. Korean brands, in other words, accept some loss of potency in exchange for a product people can use every day.

Many Korean products combine a plant extract with a derivative. goodal's Green Tangerine line, for example, is named for the unripe tangerines from Jeju it is built around. Korean brands rarely state a percentage unless it is the selling point, as with Klairs' 5 percent.

Why Korean vitamin C is gentler

Three reasons. Many Korean shoppers describe their skin as sensitive, so brands avoid stinging formulas. The Korean routine is built on layering, and a harsh active breaks that habit. And the goal is usually evenness and glow rather than a dramatic change, which is also why vitamin C is so often paired with niacinamide in Korean lines; both are covered in Niacinamide in Korean Skincare.

Serums

goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Dark Spot Care Serum took second place for serums at the Olive Young Awards 2025 and was the only vitamin C serum among the award's top serums. The awards are a purchase ranking: CJ Olive Young says the 2025 list was drawn from 180 million customer purchases between July 2024 and June 2025, across 40 categories, and the Korea JoongAng Daily has described the winners as the year's first, second and third best-sellers in each category. It is light, watery and marketed for dark spot care. Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop is the long-running pure ascorbic acid option at 5 percent, which the brand positions as a gentle entry point. SOME BY MI Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum pairs vitamin C with a ferment, and innisfree Green Tea Enzyme Vitamin C Brightening Serum pairs it with Jeju green tea.

Pads and creams

Korea also puts vitamin C into formats the West mostly does not. goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Dark Spot Care Pad is a pre-soaked toner pad version of the serum; pads in general are covered in Korean Toner Pads. goodal Green Tangerine Vita-C Dark Spot Care Cream is the matching cream for people who want the ingredient in their moisturizer rather than as a separate step.

How to use vitamin C the Korean way

  1. Morning. After cleansing and toner, before cream and sunscreen. Koreans use it in the morning because it is paired with sun protection.
  2. Every day, once your skin is used to it. Start every other day for the first two weeks if you are new to actives.
  3. Sunscreen on top, always. Vitamin C is not a sunscreen; the Linus Pauling Institute is explicit that it does not absorb UVA or UVB light, so it adds to sun protection rather than replacing it. This is the step that makes vitamin C worth using. See the Korean sunscreen guide.
  4. Keep acids and retinol for night. Do not layer vitamin C with an AHA or BHA in the same routine when you are starting out. See AHA, BHA and PHA Toners Explained.
  5. Store it away from light. Pure vitamin C turns yellow then orange as it oxidizes. A darkened serum is past its best.

FAQ

Is Korean vitamin C weaker than Western vitamin C?

Usually lower in percentage and gentler in form, by design. Korean brands prioritize daily tolerability over strength.

Can I use vitamin C with niacinamide?

Yes. Korean brands often put them in the same product, and many Korean routines use them together. If your skin is reactive, introduce one at a time.

Can I use vitamin C at night instead?

You can, but the Korean habit is morning, under sunscreen, with acids and retinol kept for night.

Why did my vitamin C serum turn orange?

Pure ascorbic acid oxidizes with light and air. Keep it capped and out of the sun, and replace it when it darkens.

How long before I notice anything?

Korean reviewers generally judge a brightening product after six to eight weeks of daily use, not after a few days.
