They focus on sharing traditional crafts in a way that feels modern, creative, and easy to experience. Inspired by traditional Korean knotting and craft techniques (or 매듭), the company creates products and workshops to bring these traditions into everyday life.

Instead of treating traditional crafts as something that only belongs in museums, SULSUL shows how you can combine them with everyday life. Their designs combine traditional techniques with modern styles, resulting in unique accessories, decorations, and handmade items that reflect Korea’s cultural heritage while still feeling fresh and modern.

At its heart, SULSUL believes that tradition should be something people can easily enjoy and connect with. By blending craftsmanship, creativity, and cultural storytelling, the company continues to find new ways to keep Korean traditions alive while sharing them with a wider audience.

SULSUL is also passionate about education and cultural exchange. Through workshops and hands-on experiences, people can learn traditional craft techniques and create their own pieces. These activities allow both locals and international visitors to discover Korean culture in a fun and interactive way.

The name SULSUL reflects this philosophy, it suggests something that flows naturally and easily, much like the company’s goal of making traditional culture approachable and part of everyday life.

Maedeup Art

Maedeup (매듭) is the name for the traditional Korean art of decorative knotting.

Its origins date all the way back to the Three Kingdoms period (37 B.C. - A.D. 668). The knots were first used in a practical way, to hold tools around the waist for hunting and fishing. Later this functional technique evolved into a decorative art form and was believed to act as a talisman bringing peace and happiness.

During the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897), maedeup became more refined and was closely associated with higher social status, as elaborate knots were seen as a sign of dignity and prestige. One of the most famous uses of maedeup is the norigae, a decorative pendant traditionally worn on a hanbok. These ornaments combined beautiful knots with silk cords and tassels, making them both fashionable and symbolic.

One of the most famous uses of maedeup is the norigae, a decorative pendant traditionally worn on a hanbok. These ornaments combined beautiful knots with silk cords and tassels, making them both fashionable and symbolic.

In maedeup the knots themselves also carry meaning. Different knot patterns can represent ideas such as unity, longevity, prosperity, or protection. Some knots are designed to look like flowers, butterflies, or geometric patterns, each symbolizing harmony and beauty. Because the entire design is made from a single cord, maedeup is often seen as a symbol of connection and continuity.

Even the color of the cord plays an important role. Traditional Korean colors often follow the concept of Obangsaek, the five cardinal colors that represent elements and directions in Korean philosophy. Red often symbolizes happiness, passion, and good fortune, while blue represents hope and vitality. Yellow is associated with balance and the center, white symbolizes purity and honesty, and black represents wisdom and depth. The colors used in maedeup were carefully chosen depending on the meaning or the purpose.

Both SULSUL and Daebak want to share and celebrate Korean culture with the rest of the world.

SULSUL focuses on preserving traditional Korean crafts and reinterprets them for modern audiences. They want to keep the traditional craftsmanship alive while making it accessible and useful to both locals and an international group.

Daebak, on the other hand, wants to introduce Korean culture to a global audience by connecting international fans with Korean trends, traditions and lifestyle elements. Daebak helps bridge cultural gaps and encourages people around the world to explore Korean culture.

By combining their strengths, both companies can reach the same goal: making Korean culture more accessible, engaging and appreciated by a global audience, but also keeping its authenticity and history.

What's in the Box?

Each box is different to make sure every customer enjoys a unique and personal experience. However, every box includes two different types of norigae, a dragonfly brooch, and a knotting DIY kit to create your own wish bracelet.

The norigae pieces are crafted using traditional Korean knotting techniques, reimagined through SulSul’s modern design to symbolize happiness, harmony, and protection. One design features the delicate “baby chick knot,” representing resilience and overcoming hardships. Another incorporates the butterfly knot: an emblem of transformation, longevity, and new beginnings, long admired for its elegant and feminine beauty.

The dragonfly brooch carries its own special meaning, symbolizing change and success. Designed in an adorable dragonfly shape with colorful thread accents, it can be worn as a brooch or styled as a decorative piece on bags and other accessories, adding both charm and significance.

Finally, the DIY kit introduces the Hapjang knot, inspired by the shape of two hands pressed together in prayer, representing heartfelt wishes and sincerity. With multiple threads included for practice and styling, it allows you to create a wearable accessory that blends tradition with everyday fashion, making the experience both creative and meaningful.
