Top Four Korean Holiday Movies

Christmas in August

Our first favorite Korean holiday movie is a Korean movie classic. Released in 1998, Christmas in August will give you all the feels, tears, and laughs you are looking for this holiday season. Starring Han Suk-kyu and Shim Eunha.

In this movie, the male lead, Jungwon played by Han Suk-kyu, is suffering from a disease that will likely be the cause of his death. Throughout his journey of dealing with life and his illnesses he meets and falls deeply in love with Darim, who is played by Shim Eunha. Given his shortened life span together Darim and Jungwon create so many memories chronicling their love as they went.

A movie that will have you smiling and crying in one as you go watch these two create good memories. You’ll have to watch it to see how it ends and enjoy this classic kmovie love story.

This movie is great for those who loved kdramas like Its Okay to Not Be Okay and It's Okay That’s Love. These two kdramas deal with mental illness but it is the love that the leads have for their partners no matter the adversities they are facing that a reminiscent of Christmas in August.

Woojoo’s Christmas

The next movie serves as a living reflection movie that Sung Woojoo played by Kim Jisoo has to live through. All the events of reflection occur just before Christmas tying it in with our Korean holiday movie list.

Sung Woojoo moves back to her hometown after her mom dies with her daughter to open a café. When she arrives in town, she meets two women with the exact name as hers. Sung Woojoo. Both women are at different ages in their life and provide Woojoo the opportunity to look back and reflect on the life she has lived up to this point.

Mixing a bit of kdrama and kfantasy this film is excellent for loves of the kdramas like Familiar Wife and The King: Eternal Monarch.

New Year Blues

New Year Blues follows the lives of four different couples as they work through and overcome various life occurrences a week before New Year’s.

Happy Ero Christmas

Happy Ero Christmas is a Korean holiday film mixing romance and comedy into one. Starring Cha Tae-Hyun and Kim Sun-a the film follows along as Cha’s character, Byung-ki, sets out to help do tasks around a small village.

As he is completing his tasks Chan runs into Kim Sun-a’s character Min-Kyung and falls head over heels for her as soon as he sees her.  Throughout the film, Byung-ki works to get the attention of Min Kyung before Christmas Eve as he tries to win her heart over the antagonist of the film.

If you enjoy a good love triangle like the kdrama True Beauty or Reply 1988 you will love watching as Byung-ki works to seal Min-kyung’s heart away. And to keep living through some of your favorite kdramas, grab kdrama merch from True Beauty like the True Beauty puzzle. Reply 1988 has one of the best OSTs for kdramas out there and you can grab it here.

The Tower

For the action lovers out there here is our favorite Korean holiday movie recommendation for this holiday season. The Tower is an action-packed movie that takes place on Christmas Eve.

The citizens find out that it won’t be snowing on Christmas and the owner of the building, Mr. Jo, decides that he will make his own snow. Having helicopters circle the tower and sprinkle snow over the tower to create Christmas Eve snow.

Without revealing too much this idea turns into a disaster with many tell-tale signs showing that issues would arise.

If you are looking for an untraditional holiday movie this one packs a thrilling disaster that takes place from wanting to create simple snow for the holidays. If you like action-packed kdramas that keep you on your toes like Vagabond or Extracurricular you’ll enjoy this Korean movie this holiday season.

No matter if you choose a heartwarming, comedic relieving, or action pack Korean holiday movie the best part of it all will be spending time with your loved ones.
