For dry hands, choose a fragrance-free Korean hand cream with ceramides or shea butter, such as the ILLIYOON Ceramide Hand Cream, the Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Moisturizing Hand Cream or the KLAIRS Daily Comfort Hand Cream (Unscented). For a scented cream that also works as a small gift, look at 3CE, d'Alba or THE FACE SHOP. For daytime sun protection on the hands, innisfree makes one with SPF15.
Hand cream is the simplest body-care product to start with, and the choice mostly comes down to three questions: is your skin dry or sensitive, do you want a scent, and do you want sun protection. This guide answers those with the Korean hand creams in our shop, and with what dermatologists advise. For face moisturizers, see our Korean moisturizer guide.
At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, product details come from each product page and the brand's descriptions; the skin-care advice comes from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), linked at the end. This is general information, not medical advice. If your hands crack deeply, bleed or develop a rash, see a doctor.
What dermatologists advise for hands
The AAD's hand-care tips say to moisturize after every hand wash or use of sanitizer, and more often in cold weather, ideally while the skin is still damp. It suggests looking for lipids such as ceramides, humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, and occlusives such as mineral oil or petrolatum, and it says creams or ointments in a tube work better than thin lotions in a pump bottle. It recommends fragrance-free, dye-free hand creams, daily broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin including the hands, and, for very dry hands, a thick layer of cream under cotton gloves overnight. In a separate page on choosing a moisturizer, the AAD says fragrance can irritate dry skin and that creams and ointments are more hydrating than lotions.

Fragrance-free creams for dry or sensitive hands
These match the AAD's advice most closely. The ILLIYOON cream lists ceramide NP and shea butter; the Dr.Jart+ cream lists ceramide NP, panthenol and glycerin; the KLAIRS cream lists shea butter, panthenol and hyaluronic acid. All three are meant to be applied after washing or whenever hands feel dry. For the other Dr.Jart+ ceramide products, see our Dr.Jart+ guide; for sensitive skin more broadly, see Korean skincare for sensitive skin.
Scented creams
Scented hand creams are a different product from the fragrance-free ones above, and the small tubes suit gifting. The 3CE, d'Alba, belif, THE FACE SHOP and Pyunkang Yul creams all list fragrance or essential oils on their ingredient lists, so they may not suit very dry or reactive hands; keep one fragrance-free cream for daily use and a scented one for your bag. Our 3CE guide and d'Alba guide cover those brands. These small tubes also work well in a K-Beauty Box-style gift selection.
Hand cream with SPF
The innisfree Jeju Orchid Hand Cream is SPF15 PA+. The AAD advises SPF 30 or higher for exposed skin, so treat an SPF15 hand cream as an extra layer for daily errands rather than a replacement for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen on long days outdoors. Our Korean sunscreen guide explains how to apply and reapply.
How to choose
- Very dry, cracked or sensitive hands: a fragrance-free ceramide cream, applied after every wash.
- Everyday carry: a 30 to 50ml tube; keep the big pump at the sink.
- Gifts: a scented small tube such as 3CE, d'Alba or THE FACE SHOP.
- Overnight repair: a thick layer of a fragrance-free cream, then cotton gloves, as the AAD suggests.
Hand creams in our shop are brand-shipped. Browse more in the ILLIYOON and Dr.Jart+ collections.
FAQ
What should I look for in a hand cream?
According to the AAD: ceramides, humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, and occlusives such as petrolatum, in a fragrance-free cream or ointment.
How often should I apply hand cream?
After every hand wash or use of sanitizer, and more often in cold weather, per the AAD.
Are scented hand creams bad for dry hands?
The AAD says fragrance can irritate dry skin. If your hands are very dry or sensitive, use a fragrance-free cream.
Is SPF15 enough on the hands?
The AAD advises SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin. An SPF15 hand cream is a light daily layer, not a full substitute.
Is a hand cream better than a body lotion for hands?
The AAD says creams and ointments in a tube work better on hands than thin lotions in a pump bottle.
