Korean Shampoo and Scalp Care: Why Koreans Focus on the Scalp

Table of Contents

Korean hair care treats the scalp as the foundation of healthy hair, so many shampoos are formulated as scalp products first. Koreans also tend to wash their hair often: a 2022 Dyson study cited by Korea JoongAng Daily found 65% wash at least daily. To choose a Korean shampoo, match it to your scalp (oily, dry or sensitive), not just your hair type.

Korean shampoo has become one of the most searched K-beauty categories outside skincare. At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, we look at how the scalp-first approach works and which products on our shop fit different scalps. This is general information, not medical advice.

Why is Korean hair care scalp-focused?

The Asia Business Daily reported in June 2026 that Korea has long treated scalp health as the foundation of healthy hair, and that brands regularly release scalp tonics, ampoules, scalers (exfoliators) and functional shampoos. It also describes head spa services that combine scalp diagnosis, cleansing, massage and exfoliation. The paper cites travel platform Creatrip as saying tourist spending on K-scalp care rose about 219% year over year from January to November of the previous year, with the U.S. making up 37% of bookings. These are tourist-booking figures, not total sales.

Korea JoongAng Daily (May 2025) adds the habits behind the products. A 2022 Dyson study found 65% of Koreans wash their hair at least once a day, against a global average of 38%. The article links this partly to fine dust and social expectations about appearance, and says CJ Olive Young designs most hair lines assuming daily washing. It also notes that scalp treatments, such as cooling or pleasantly scented options, are the latest trend according to an Olive Young insider.

What this means in practice

  • Gentle, low-pH shampoos suit frequent washing.
  • Scalp-specific formulas (oily, dry, sensitive) rather than one formula for everyone.
  • Extra steps such as scalp treatments, ampoules or tonics, used after shampooing.

How to wash the Korean way

  1. Wet hair and scalp thoroughly with lukewarm water, as the LADOR page advises.
  2. Use about a quarter-sized amount (the whamisa pages' guide) and lather between your palms first.
  3. Massage the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails.
  4. Rinse thoroughly, then apply treatment to lengths, not roots, unless the product is a scalp treatment.
  5. Dry the scalp gently and avoid very hot water.

If you like trying Korean products across categories, the Daebak K-Beauty Box is a curated skincare and makeup option; hair care is not a guaranteed part of it, and contents change by season. For face care pairings, see The Korean Skincare Routine, Simplified.

FAQ

How often should I wash my hair?

It depends on your scalp and hair. Koreans often wash daily according to the Dyson study, but daily washing is not required for everyone.

Is a scalp treatment necessary?

No. It is an optional extra step many Korean routines include, especially for oily or sensitive scalps.

Are these shampoos hair-loss treatments?

No. We link shampoos for cleansing and scalp comfort only. If you are worried about hair loss, see a doctor or dermatologist.

What if my scalp stings?

Rinse well and stop using the product. Menthol and salicylic acid can irritate some people.
