Snail Mucin in Korean Skincare: What It Is and How to Use It

Table of Contents

Snail mucin, listed as "snail secretion filtrate" on ingredient labels, is a hydrating ingredient made popular by Korean skincare brands. It appears in essences, serums, toners and creams, usually for hydration and a smooth, comfortable feel. It is not vegan, and a patch test is sensible before you commit.

Snail products sound surprising the first time you hear about them, yet snail mucin has been a fixture of K-beauty for years. Here is what it is and how people use it; the ingredient facts come from the research review and news sources listed at the end.

What is snail mucin?

Snail mucin is the filtered secretion of snails. On a label you will usually see it as Snail Secretion Filtrate. Korean brands use it in formulas meant to hydrate and leave skin feeling smooth and supple. Concentration varies: some products highlight a high percentage, while others use it as one part of a wider formula. A 2025 review in the journal Molecules describes the mucus of the common garden snail (Cornu aspersum, formerly Cryptomphalus aspersa) as a mixture of glycosaminoglycans including hyaluronic acid, allantoin, glycoproteins, glycolic acid and other compounds, and calls snail secretion filtrate the most common snail-derived raw material in cosmetics.

A few honest notes: it is an animal-derived ingredient, so it is not vegan, and it is not right for anyone with a related allergy. Brands describe benefits like hydration and comfort, and individual results vary; the same review says there is still a lack of safety and efficacy data from clinical trials, and that most supporting studies are laboratory work. The ingredient's fame is commercial more than clinical: the Korea JoongAng Daily reported in 2023 that COSRX, founded in 2013, made about 90 percent of its sales overseas and that its snail essence had reached Amazon's bestseller list, shortly before Amorepacific made the brand a subsidiary. Our COSRX guide maps the brand's full range.

How is snail mucin used in a routine?

Most Korean snail products are light, watery or gel-like, so they fit after cleansing and toning:

  1. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser.
  2. Tone if you use one.
  3. Apply a snail essence or serum, patting it in.
  4. Seal with a moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning.
