Korean Christmas: 3 Ideas for Celebrating With Your Friends

South Korea is not a predominantly Christian country. Only around 30% of the population belong to the religion, which explains why a Korean Christmas is more often considered a romantic holiday.

Christmas is also widely celebrated in South Korea as a public holiday, unlike its neighboring Asian countries. Unlike traditional Korean holidays (like Seollal or Chuseok), Christmas is usually celebrated with friends or a significant other. Because of this, Koreans don’t really feel the need to rush to their hometowns.

But a Korean Christmas is still a good excuse to take time off.

If you’re looking for how you can celebrate the occasion with your loved one, here are some options:

Korean Christmas Idea #1: Go on a Romantic Date

Instead of opening presents and spending time with family, Koreans consider Christmas as a time for couples. Some couples or close friends exchange gifts, but it’s not as common as it is in the West.

They usually plan dates with activities such as ice skating, skiing, or snuggling up inside and enjoying Christmas movies.

The occasion is basically about having a good time with your significant other.

Korean Christmas Idea #2: Decorate With Christmas Ornaments

Like other countries, South Koreans are making the most of this celebration.Stores and streets are filled with bright and shimmering lights and decorations to get shoppers into the Christmas spirit.

Christmas trees are also a popular way to decorate malls. Putting up a Christmas tree at home depends largely on the individual or family.

Decorating your home isn’t as popular as it is in the West though. Since most people live in multi-complex buildings, it is very uncommon to see outdoor Christmas decorations due to the lack of space.

Korean Christmas Idea #3: Indulge in Korean Fried Chicken and Cake

Eating out in South Korea often involves sharing the same dish. Typical foods include Bulgogi, sweet potato noodles, and Kimchi. This means having Korean BBQ, Jjolmyeon (쫄면), or other traditional winter dishes for Christmas.

However, the most important part of Christmas food is not about the main dish– but rather the dessert.

Many Korean couples share a Christmas cake between them as a sweet gesture to celebrate the holiday.
