Korean skincare for sensitive skin keeps the routine short and the ingredient lists shorter: a mild low-pH cleanser, a fragrance-free toner, one soothing serum or ampoule, a barrier cream and a mineral or gentle sunscreen. Lines built for this include Round Lab's Dokdo range, Anua Heartleaf, SKIN1004 Centella, Etude Soonjung and Aestura Atobarrier.
Korean brands make a large "derma" and "soothing" category, with a lot of fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient products built around centella, heartleaf and panthenol. This guide picks a routine from that category and is the third in our skin-type series, after oily skin and dry skin.
At Daebak, a Seoul-based Korean culture and product company, product descriptions come from the brands. Sensitive skin varies a lot from person to person, so patch test before using anything on your face, and add one product at a time. If your skin reacts to most products or you have a diagnosed condition, see a dermatologist first.
The American Academy of Dermatology describes a home patch test this way: choose a quarter-sized spot where rubbing or washing will not remove the product, such as the inside of the forearm or the crease of the elbow, apply your normal amount twice a day for 7 to 10 days, and use the product on your face only if there is no reaction. If you get redness, itching or swelling, stop and wash the area gently; for a severe reaction, see a dermatologist. The Academy adds that active ingredients such as retinol and glycolic acid can cause mild, temporary irritation, especially on sensitive skin.
What to look for, what to avoid
| Look for | Avoid, or test carefully |
|---|---|
| Fragrance-free and essential-oil-free | Perfumed products, strong botanical oils |
| Short ingredient lists | Products that do many things at once |
| Centella (cica), heartleaf, panthenol, ceramides | Daily exfoliating acids, high-strength retinol at the start |
| Low-pH, non-foaming or lightly foaming cleansers | Scrubs, hot water, cleansing brushes |
| Mineral (zinc or titanium) or gentle hybrid sunscreens | Alcohol-heavy sprays and mists |
Two ingredients come up again and again in this category. Centella asiatica is explained in What Is Cica (Centella Asiatica)?, and heartleaf in Heartleaf in Korean Skincare.

Step by step
1. Cleanse without stripping
Many sensitive-skin routines in Korea start the morning with water only. At night, use a mild low-pH foam such as Dr.Jart+ Cicapair Gentle Cleansing Foam. An oil or balm cleanser first is only needed if you wore sunscreen or makeup; NBC Select's experts caution that people with rosacea, eczema, dryness or sensitivity may want to avoid double cleansing because it can over-strip natural oils. See What Is Double Cleansing? and Cleansing Oil vs Cleansing Balm.
2. A fragrance-free toner
Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner is a watery, fragrance-free toner built around deep-sea water, and a common choice for sensitive skin. Anua Heartleaf 77 Hyaluron Soothing Toner is the heartleaf alternative. Pat on with hands rather than a cotton pad, which rubs.

3. One soothing ampoule
Keep the treatment step to one product. SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule is a single-ingredient centella ampoule with a watery texture, which is why it is so often the first "active" step people with reactive skin try. If you are unsure what an ampoule is, read Serum vs Essence vs Ampoule.

4. A barrier cream
Etude Soonjung 2x Barrier Intensive Cream comes from Soonjung, Etude's line made specifically for sensitive skin with a short ingredient list and no fragrance. Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream is the ceramide cream from a Korean dermocosmetic brand that took first place for creams at the Olive Young Awards 2025. Choose Soonjung for a lighter feel and Aestura for drier skin. The full Aestura range, including the redness-focused A-CICA 365 line, is in the Aestura guide; for Dr.G's Red Blemish soothing line, see the Dr.G guide.

5. A mineral or gentle sunscreen
Sunscreen is the step sensitive skin most often skips because of stinging, and the usual Korean answer is a mineral filter. goodal Heartleaf Calming Mineral Filter Sun Cream pairs a mineral filter with heartleaf. Our Korean sunscreen guide explains the difference between mineral and chemical filters.
How to add new products safely
- Patch test following the American Academy of Dermatology method above: a quarter-sized spot on the inner forearm, twice a day for 7 to 10 days.
- Add one product at a time and wait a week before the next.
- Start actives such as acids or retinol at the lowest strength, once a week. See AHA, BHA and PHA Toners Explained for the gentlest option, PHA.
- If something stings or turns skin red, stop; do not try to "push through".
Brand products in our shop are shipped by the brands. A curated box such as the Daebak K-Beauty Box is a separate option, but because its contents are not customized, people with very reactive skin usually do better choosing single products.

Is Korean skincare fragrance-free?
Not all of it, but the soothing and derma categories usually are. Check the ingredient list for "fragrance", "parfum" or essential oils.
Can sensitive skin use snail mucin or niacinamide?
Many people do, but both should be patch tested. See Snail Mucin in Korean Skincare and Niacinamide in Korean Skincare.
Can sensitive skin use a sheet mask?
Yes, a fragrance-free one, once a week to start. See How to Use a Korean Sheet Mask.
