Is BLACKPINK in Mean Girls 2024? Here's How They Influenced the Movie

Blinks rejoice! The classic film, Mean Girls, is back for a new re-telling of its story. 

One important thing to note about the 2024 film, however, is that it is now a musical adaptation. So yes, you can expect a lot of singing and dancing in the new film. 

But did you know that BLACKPINK inspired one of the choreographies of Mean Girls 2024? Here’s what we know about the BLACKPINK in Mean Girls reference. 

In an interview with PopBase, film choreographer, Kyle Hanagami, shared that BLACKPINK served as inspiration for the infamous Christmas recital scene where the girls danced in.

Hanagami shared that he wanted to connect the film with its young viewers, this is why he chose to include choreography from the K-Pop girl group.

“I was like, ‘I feel like this is the generation that grew up watching Blackpink,' So when I was choreographing the Christmas dance, I was like, ‘Let’s put a little bit of inspiration from Blackpink in there.’ So it’s definitely kind of inspired by some of the work that I’ve done for other artists just because I feel like it’s influenced this new generation of performers and actors.”

Kyle Hanagami is a talented and sought-after choreographer in the US and throughout the world. 

He previously worked with BLACKPINK to create the group’s iconic dance routines for some of their major hits like DDU-DU DDU-DU, Kill This Love, Ice Cream, BOOMBAYAH, As If It Was Your Last, and Flower by Jisoo.

Aside from working with the girl group, Hanagami worked with other young women who were also part of a foursome. This includes the fictional Plastics group for Mean Girls. Other K-Pop groups he worked with include TWICE, EXO, Girls’ Generation, and aespa.

In the US, Hanagami’s clients include Cnco, Chanel, Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, NSync, and Jennifer Lopez.

No, none of the members of the iconic group are in Mean Girls 2024. But if you watch really closely, the Plastics’ dance steps will remind you of BLACKPINK’s moves too.

Hanagami shared a clip of what the dance moves look like. The video doesn’t feature the stars of the musical but it gives us a glimpse at what the dance steps are.
