The queens of Red Velvet are back with their eighth mini album titled, ‘The ReVe Festival 2022 Birthday.’ The album consists of five new tracks and comes just seven months after their first Japanese studio album, ‘Bloom’ was released.

Red Velvet debuted in 2014 under SM entertainment with their single, ‘Happiness.’ Since then, the five-member girl group has continued to gain global success and won several prestigious awards, including MAMA’s Best Female Group in 2017 & Best Dance Performance in 2015, as well as many others.

Also, members Joy, Wendy, and Seulgi have released their solo albums in addition to their group projects, with Joy and Wendy’s albums having been released in 2021 and Selugi’s this past October.

Below is a review of the five tracks from Red Velvet’s latest album, ‘The ReVe Festival 2022 – Birthday,’ so keep reading if you want to learn more about the group’s newest songs!

‘The ReVe Festival 2022 Birthday’ Tracklist

1. Birthday (Title Track)

This title track screams Red Velvet and kicks off the album with a celebration! Like many of RV’s music videos, it is pretty interesting when you first watch it, but after seeing it a few times, it suits the song pretty well. The choreography is also super playful!

The title track also samples George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” giving fans all the more reason to appreciate and ‘Celebrate’ Red Velvet’s comeback!

The official music video for ‘Birthday’ was released on November 28th, 2022, and has already received 7.4 million views.

Also, with ‘The ReVe Festival 2022 – Birthday’ comeback, RV surpassed 1 million total albums sold on Hanteo, making them kpop’s fifth-ever girl group to do so.

They were even able to break S.E.S.’s 20-year-old record for album sales, making them the best-selling girl group in S.M. history, which is some queen-type behavior!

This song is title track material! With savage lyrics, "I only had love for you," and "you and I are just a mistake," it's clear that the girls of Red Velvet are trying to tell someone, "BYE BYE," or at least help you to do the same.

The track instantly draws you in with their haunting vocals at the beginning of the song, which is why it's arguably one of the best b-sides off of the album.

3. On A Ride

“On a Ride” is giving that typical k-drama amusement park date vibe, and I am here for it. It is one of those young love types of songs, which is a complete shift from their second track, “BYE BYE.”

I’d love to see a music video for this song since it already includes a lot of visuals and lyrics alluding to theme parks, but we’ll have to keep listening as we wait!

This track is about finding out that the person you love hasn’t been loyal to you, and you realize that your love for them was blinding you of the warning signs.

This song follows the storyboard of this ‘investigation’ into your flawed relationship and is executed very well through the lyrics.

On another note, Wendy’s high note at the end of the bridge is AMAZING, so make sure you give “ZOOM” a listen!

5. Celebrate

The last track on the 'The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday' album closes it off on a nostalgic and sentimental note, having a slower beat and rhythm than the preceding tracks on the album.

Don't let the title fool you into thinking it's an upbeat party song since it sends the message that the party is unfortunately over, even if you don't want it to end.

This song could definitely become the closing song for their concert or be incorporated into their ending ments with the way that it's trying to say goodbye but not let go of the memories, which is exactly what kpop fans go through after a concert.

Here are my rankings of the songs from ‘The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday’ album:

  1. BYE BYE

  2. Birthday

  3. ZOOM

  4. On A Ride

  5. Celebrate
